Stay in a communist prison, Prague

We stayed in an ex-communist prison in Prague (now a hostel I hasten to add!), and would recommend it as a quirky place to stay. It’s called the Art Prison Hostel.

It’s kind of creepy when you think about it – a lot of nasty things happened here, interrogations and suchlike. But it’s easy to forget as they have decorated it nicely.

It’s also very cheap, and has a fantastic central location between old town square and the main theatre. It was originally a convent, but secret police used it as a prison and interrogation HQ in the Communist era. The president Václav Havel was even kept here (I forget which room, but you can stay there).
