The Space Shuttle Café, USA

Here at Quirky Guide, we’ve seen disused aeroplanes turned into hotels, museums and even a classroom before. But this converted 1944 DC3 is out of this world.

Its history as an aircraft is colourful enough (it was flown in World War II, and supposedly hi-jacked to Cuba). But when it was grounded in the 1970s, things started to get really weird.

First, a chap named Smokey Rolland salvaged the plane, hoisted its fuselage onto an old school bus frame and used it as a motor home. Then, a NASA-obsessed couple bought the craft and converted it to look like a space shuttle. Decades later, another couple bought the shuttle and spent four years converting it to a mobile cafe, the Space Shuttle Cafe. To track it down, visit any airshow in California.
