The Casbah Roadhouse, South Africa

Along the commercial vein of Voortrekker Road, in Pretoria, is a roadside diner reminiscent of a time before drive-thru.

A flashback to the days when in-car dining was all the rage, Casbah Roadhouse is an eatery with a suitably 50s style get-up, Thunderbird motifs, and friendly waiters who attach white hook-on trays to your window.

The menu, two pages of tightly packed copy, is an extensive selection of burgers, fries, footlongs and dagwoods, as well as a variety of shakes. It’s a popular takeaway spot, with a bright neon sign and customers that sometimes include the late night police patrol.

It’s inexpensive, fun, and as proven by the bustling outside patio, it serves the type of food people are also happy to get out of their cars for.
