Prison restaurant, Italy

The staff at this restaurant are serving more than delicious southern Italian dishes. They’re also serving sentences for armed robbery and murder. Even the guy playing the piano is a hardened criminal.

The Fortezza Medicea restaurant in Volterra, just outside Pisa, is inside a high-security prison.

Open to the public once a month, diners eat on plain wooden benches with security guards standing watch. Only plastic cutlery and plates are used – just to be on the safe side.

The restaurant is an experiment in prison rehab – the idea being that inmates can find work in the catering industry after release.

Allow two months for a reservation though. You’ll have to be vetted by Italy’s Department of Justice first!
