Kura Sushi restaurant, Japan

Think conveyor-belt sushi restaurant meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: sushi made by robots, wacky dishes like hamburger sushi and boiled egg sushi, and lots of amusing high-tech gadgetry.

Kura Sushi restaurants, dotted through Japan, are all about fun. You order from photos on your personal 16-inch touchscreen. And when your order reaches you via the conveyor-belt, your screen will announce its arrival.

Slide your empty plates down a special washing-up chute in your table. After five plates have gone down, a computer game will come up on your screen, giving you the chance to win a prize.

And if you’re worried about eating sushi that isn’t fresh, watch any plate that has been on the belt for 55 minutes automatically go down the rubbish chute.
