Cabbages and Condoms, Bangkok

Birth control. It wouldn’t be everyone’s idea of a great theme for a restaurant but it certainly makes for eye-catching decor. Condom-flowers dot tables, chairs and trees in this east Bangkok venue; prophylactics are handed out with coffee in lieu of mints, and menus proudly boast ‘Our food guaranteed not to cause pregnancy’.

The contraception vibe is the brainchild of the so-called ‘Condom King’ and former health minister for Thailand, Mechai Viravaidya, who set up the Population and Community Development Association (PCDA) in the 1970s in a bid to keep population numbers down.

Luckily the unusual theme isn’t the only draw for hungry punters. A menu of tasty green, red and massaman curries, and famously hot salads attract a packed house of locals and tourists alike.
