Meet the king, Ireland

Far away from the bright lights and paddy-whackery that Dublin so relentlessly offers as ‘Ireland,’ Tory Island lies nestled in another era, just off the Northwest Coast of the country. A short ferry ride from the mainland in County Donegal takes you to this predominantly Gaelic-speaking island, of around 170 inhabitants, where there is a wealth of things to see.

What really makes the island stand out, however, is that Tory is the only remaining place in Ireland that elects a King. Although he has no formal powers, Patsy Dan Rodgers (a well-known painter) is the current monarch. He is often there to offer a friendly welcome to travellers arriving on the ferry.

You might even be able to knock back a pint or two with the king, because he’s often to be found in the island’s pub come the evening.
