Wall Drug Store, USA

Popping to the shops rarely involves mechanical dinosaurs, man-sized rabbit statues and singing gorillas – unless you visit Wall Drug Store.

Over a million tourists a year head to this quirky shopping mall. As a small drug shack back in 1931, it became popular when the new owners started giving out free ice water to tourists heading for Mount Rushmore.

Now it contains a motorised cowboy orchestra, stuffed animals, 9,000 styles of cowboy boots, a replica of the original store, a fully functioning chapel and some of the best hot-beef sandwiches in the country. The 24m Apatosaurous lets you know you’ve arrived.

In fact, it’s almost impossible to visit South Dakota and miss it, with store signs stretching 500 miles along Interstate 90.
