Kashgar Market, China

Tired of never being able to find fresh goat meat at the local farmers market? Outraged by the going price of sheep? Then head to the Mal Bazaar, the Sunday livestock market in Silk Road town, Kashgar.

Every Sunday locals from the surrounding villages in the far western Chinese province of Xinjiang come to town to buy and sell animals: goats, sheep, horses, donkeys, even camels are on offer.

And while the number of tourists now rival the number of delicious fire-oven baked bagel stands that dot the market, the space is so huge – it is reputably the biggest bazaar in Asia – you can easily forget the tour groups and get haggling.

A souvenir donkey for mum, maybe?
