Giant pelicans, Greece

Put away your binoculars bird watchers, because the giant pelicans of Mykonos island are one species of feathered friend you won’t be able to miss.

Averaging the size of a small child, and pretty in pink-coloured feathers, these mascots of the picturesque Cycladic island really do cause a flap as they waddle casually around the windy streets.

Rumoured to have settled on the island after an injury in 1954, the original Mykonos mascot, Petros, is said to have perished in the 1980s when he was, um, interfered with inappropriately by a drunk tourist.

But never fear, Greek locals have now introduced three new specimens, who are more than happy to pose for the odd picture. Just make sure you watch out for those oversized beaks!
