Ferrari artwork, Monte Carlo

Strolling along the seafront in Monte Carlo can be a depressing experience if you’re not a millionaire, but in the Villa Sauber there’s an exhibit that is guaranteed to make you smile.

After a seemingly endless procession of car showrooms with Bentleys and Mercedes – all very bling – artist Bertrand Lavier has displayed his own playful, ironic comment on it all, in the Villa’s former garage. He has placed a Ferrari 308 GTS, but look closely and you’ll see it is covered in thick paint. So it’s not real, it’s a model – or is it?

The 61-year-old artist chuckles: “I like the fact it’s along the same road as all of these real cars in windows. Mine is also a real car. It’s interesting to wonder now whether it’s worth more, because it’s my art, or less, because I’ve covered it in paint.”
