Brolly shop, London

James Smith and Sons is the sort of store that makes you wish it would rain more often – a one-stop brolly shop stuffed with every conceivable variation on the umbrella as well as walking and shooting sticks and novelty canes.

It’s also a wonderful example of Victorian shopfront design and has remained virtually unchanged in 140 years. Sadly, you can no longer purchase a sword stick to skewer the bounder eyeing up your fob watch, but there’s still plenty to whet the appetite.

Eccentric, delightfully old-fashioned in a stiff upper lip kind of way and the only place to pick up that perfect parasol for the summer season.
