Fighting your way to the bar might seem daunting in crowded pubs, but ordering a beer at this Scottish hostelry involves an 18-mile hike through the Highlands. According to Guinness World Records, the Old Forge is mainland Britain’s remotest pub.
Winding up and down steep slopes and along Loch Hourn, the walk to this watering hole is so tough that you have to camp for a night, or bunk down in a stone bothy (basic shelter). When you reach the tip of the Knoydart peninsula and claim your hard-earned pint, the Old Forge proves to be a buzzing meeting point, where locals mix with fleece-clad yachters.
If you don’t fancy tramping back to civilisation after a night of real ales and traditional music, you can charter a boat to take you along the loch. Alternatively, thrice-weekly ferries tackle the seven-mile sea crossing to Mallaig.
