Fancy a wintry dip in the Thames? Or the Seine? No, we didn’t think so. But taking a bath in Berlin’s River Spree is a surprisingly appealing prospect these days, thanks to the Badeschiff floating swimming pool.

Built from a recycled river cargo vessel, the 32m-long pool is one of the German capital’s more unusual sights.

It was opened in 2004, complete with a trendy open-air bar, wooden boardwalks and views of the city.

In summer, it is open to the elements but from November to March a semi-transparent shell covers the ship to create a unique indoor pool complete with saunas, a cooling platform and bar.
