Tar barrels parade, England

How will you be spending New Year’s Eve? Partying with friends, snuggled up at home, or quaffing champagne in foreign lands perhaps?

Unless, that is, you hail from Allendale in Northumberland. The villagers here don flimsy fancy dress in freezing temperatures and parade around town with burning tar barrels on their heads.

Assuming they make it that far without setting light to their bearer’s hair, the barrels are then tipped into a huge bonfire in the market square, while troubadours keep the crowds entertained.

Watch fiery footage of the event here.
