Comedy football match, England

Scarborough beach football match between the fishermen and firemen on Boxing Day © myrddrr

Playing comedy soccer in fancy dress is nothing new, but never loses its appeal all the same. Especially when it’s on a wintry beach and the losing players get dunked in the sea afterwards.

This fishermen vs firemen match takes place every Boxing Day in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. It has been an annual tradition since 1893, when it started as a fund-raiser for the widows of fishermen lost in a storm.

The game is followed by the Crazy Raft Race in the harbour and, of course, much celebrating in local pubs.
