The Cage of Death, Australia

Four centimeters. It doesn’t sound like much of a divide between 700kg of ravenous saltwater crocodile and a rather tasty-looking tourist or two.

But that hasn’t stopped hordes of eager divers queuing up for a dip in the ‘Cage of Death’ at Crocosaurus Cove in downtown Darwin, Australia. Opened in 2008, the attraction sees a cage made from 4cm-thick panes of acrylic-strengthened glass lowered into an oversized croc’s pool for 15 minutes.

The glass is apparently too tough for reptiles’ jaws and claws to break through. But it bears several ominous-looking gashes where they have tried.

The park boasts seven big crocs, including Burt, an ageing movie star who bared his teeth in the film Crocodile Dundee.
