You might think the only place to see historical artefacts in central London is a museum. But you’d be wrong. Believe it or not, they are scattered all over the banks of the River Thames.
Not many people know that the river’s tide is continually washing up pieces of London’s history on its shores: An Elizabethan clay pipe or a medieval roof tile here, an eighteenth century witch’s bottle or something Roman there. Pick your way through the pebbles between the Millennium Bridge and Tower Bridge and within minutes you’ll have pockets full of treasure from hundreds or even thousands of years ago.
And if you want some expert help, London Walks offers a guided Thames Beachcombing expedition with an inter-tidal archaeologist. She can even tell how old a bone is by sniffing it!
