Summer skiing, France

You’d be forgiven for thinking you had misheard the response to the question ‘what are you doing for your summer holidays?’ if the answer was skiing in the French Alps. But for some, summer rays caught atop a snow-covered mountain are more enjoyable than any caught at a beach.

Such holiday makers might just be onto something with this unusual summer pastime: for starters it means reduced lift pass prices, shorter queues and emptier, less churned up slopes.

Tignes is one of the most popular resorts for summer skiing. It boasts 16 ski lifts and 20km of piste, including a snowpark. Take a rest from skiing and you can enjoy stunning views, including Tignes lake, where you can just about make out saner people enjoying more conventional summer pastimes below.
