Old Mount Gambier Gaol, Australia

Old Mount Gambier Gaol @ Mount Gambier Tourism

For a stopover with a difference, the Old Mount Gambier Gaol is the place to go. A former South Australian State Prison, it was closed in 1995. But rather than leave it at that, it was re-opened as hostel accommodation.

The site has been kept as close as possible to the original prison appearance. Visitors sleep in the original cells, only now it is possible to unlock the doors without the assistance of a prison guard.

The accommodation is fairly basic and the shower facilities are shared, with the exception of a single, self-contained unit in the former women’s section. There is also a restaurant, bar and self-catering facilities available on-site. Hopefully the meals will be better than prison food!
