Marching ducks, USA

Tennessee, the state of Jack Daniels and country music, is also home to the quirkiest of hotels, the Peabody Hotel of Memphis.

The Peabody provides luxurious accommodation, but it’s best known for the team of ‘marching ducks’ that are kept in a deluxe penthouse suite. The birds even have their very own Duck Master, who cares for their every need.

These pampered poultry take a daily waddle into the hotel’s glass elevator and down a VIP red carpet into the lobby to splash around in its fountain. The march is a long-standing tradition that began in the 1930s when the then general manager returned from a hunting trip, and let his live decoy ducks loose in the fountain.

Thankfully, duck is no longer on the hotel menu. Though if it were, the clientele would surely be delighted by its freshness.
