Lighthouse and crane hotel, Netherlands

Lighthouse fanatics, sea lovers or even those wanting to get away from land will love the Vuurtoren and Harbour Crane at Harlingen.

One double room is available for guests at the lighthouse, which enjoys panoramic views of the Wadden sea, the sound of the waves and peaceful ka-kaauw of surrounding gulls. The lighthouse ceased functioning in 1998, and was later bought and converted into this peculiar guest room.

If the lighthouse is booked up, the same people also have a 17m-high crane room at the Harlingen Harbour. At a push of a lever, the room will swing round 360 degrees for a dizzying impression of the harbour.

Hopeful guests should book well in advance as rooms in these two quirky hotels are highly sought after.
