Jumbo Hostel, Stockholm, Sweden

Falling asleep at the controls of a jumbo jet would normally invite catastrophe. Not so in this unique Swedish hostel.

A decommissioned model 747-200 aircraft, last operated in 2002, was recently snapped up by local businessman Oscar Diös and converted into the stylish budget accommodation. It now sits right beside Arlanda Airport, Stockholm.

Jumbo Hostel has a variety of rooms from basic four-bed dorms to a luxury suite in the converted cockpit, which overlooks the airport landing strip. All rooms have modern décor and share shower and toilet facilities.

If you can’t stay onboard, do grab a snack in the onboard café. Or in summer, go wing walking – the jumbo’s left wing doubles as an observation deck with panoramic airport views.
