Scotland’s West Highland, reckoned to be one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys, curves across viaducts, around lochs and between hills. At Glenfinnan, the scenery isn’t the only thing to gawp at, as the tiny station boasts a railway museum and two 1950s train carriages.
In the dining car, you can take in the views of Loch Shiel while scoffing a cream tea. Even more fun is the sleeping car, which is kitted out with all the backpacker essentials: a communal kitchen and dining room, and bunk beds in the couchettes.
Sitting in the old fashioned passenger seats, remembering childhood choo-choo outings and whiling away an evening over a board game, you almost expect the carriage to lurch into life.
In the summer, the Jacobite steam train stops at Glenfinnan on its daily journey to the west coast.
